dental implants · costa mesa

engineering precision, human warmth.

Dr. Skuben’s background in aerospace engineering shapes how he plans every implant — 3D imaging for bone density, virtual surgical guides, and custom temporaries for smile evaluations. Single tooth, multiple teeth, full-arch: each case is its own equation.
single tooth

one implant, one perfect tooth.

A single dental implant replaces one missing tooth without affecting neighboring teeth. A titanium post is placed into the jawbone, acting as a new root. Once healed, a custom porcelain crown is attached — matching the color, shape, and function of your natural teeth.

Unlike a traditional bridge, a single implant doesn’t require grinding down adjacent healthy teeth. It also preserves bone density in the jaw, preventing the sunken appearance that follows tooth loss.

advantages
  • No impact on adjacent healthy teeth
  • Preserves jawbone density and facial structure
  • Looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth
  • Can last a lifetime with proper care
  • Easy to clean — brush and floss normally
multiple teeth

strategically placed, permanently fixed.

When multiple adjacent teeth are missing, implant-supported bridges offer a fixed, permanent solution. Rather than placing one implant per missing tooth, we strategically position two or more implants to support a bridge — fewer posts, full function, and a result that looks and feels completely natural.

This approach is more conservative than individual implants and more stable than a traditional removable partial denture. The bridge is permanently cemented and never needs to be removed.

benefits
  • Fewer implant posts needed than individual replacements
  • Fixed permanently — no removal, no adhesive
  • Restores full chewing force and speech
  • Prevents bone loss in the edentulous area
  • Natural appearance — no visible hardware
full-arch restoration

a complete smile in one day.

Full-arch implant restoration (often called All-on-4® or All-on-6) replaces an entire arch of teeth using just four to six strategically angled implants. A fixed, permanent bridge is attached the same day — no denture adhesive, no slipping, and dramatically improved chewing force.

This solution is life-changing for patients with significant tooth loss, failing dentition, or ill-fitting dentures. You leave the office with a full set of beautiful, functional teeth.

why full-arch
  • Fixed, permanent teeth — never removed
  • Same-day placement in many cases
  • Only 4–6 implants needed per arch
  • Restores 90%+ of natural bite force
  • Preserves facial structure and prevents bone loss
implants vs. dentures

why implants outperform dentures.

Traditional dentures rest on the gums and rely on adhesive or suction. Implants are anchored in bone — they don’t slip, don’t limit what you eat, and don’t accelerate bone loss.

Stronger Bite Force
Implants restore up to 90% of natural chewing power. Dentures typically provide only 25–30%.
Bone Preservation
Implants stimulate the jawbone just like natural roots, preventing the bone resorption that causes facial collapse.
No Adhesive Needed
Implants are fixed in place. No messy adhesive, no slipping during meals or conversation.
Natural Feel
Because they’re anchored in bone, implants feel like your own teeth — you forget they’re there.
Long-Term Value
While the upfront cost is higher, implants can last a lifetime. Dentures need relining or replacement every 5–7 years.
Protect Remaining Teeth
Unlike bridges, implants don’t require grinding down adjacent healthy teeth for support.
the process

planned digitally, placed precisely.

Step 01
3D Imaging & Planning
i-CAT cone beam scan maps bone density, nerve paths, and sinus proximity. Dr. Skuben plans implant angle and depth digitally before touching a handpiece.
Step 02
Guided Placement
A surgical guide printed from the digital plan ensures sub-millimeter accuracy. Most single implants take 30–45 minutes.
Step 03
Healing & Integration
Osseointegration takes 3–6 months. A temporary restoration keeps you comfortable and confident throughout.
Step 04
Final Restoration
A custom crown, bridge, or full-arch prosthesis is placed — color-matched, contoured, and designed to last decades.
mini implants

mini implants — big results, smaller footprint.

Mini dental implants (MDIs) are about half the diameter of traditional implants, making them ideal for patients with limited bone density or those who want a less invasive procedure. They’re often used to stabilize lower dentures, providing a secure snap-in fit without the slipping and adhesive of conventional dentures.

Placement is minimally invasive — often completed in a single visit with local anesthesia. Recovery is faster, and many patients can use their stabilized denture the same day.

ideal for
  • Stabilizing loose lower dentures
  • Patients with insufficient bone for standard implants
  • Single-visit placement with immediate use
  • Less invasive — smaller incision, faster healing
  • More affordable than full-size implant systems
implant-supported dentures

dentures that stay put.

Implant-supported dentures combine the full-arch coverage of a denture with the stability of dental implants. Two to six implants anchor the denture securely to the jawbone, eliminating slipping, clicking, and the need for messy adhesives.

Options include snap-in overdentures (removable for cleaning) and fixed hybrid prostheses (permanently attached). Both restore confidence in eating, speaking, and smiling — and both preserve jawbone density that traditional dentures accelerate losing.

options
  • Snap-In Overdenture — Removable for cleaning, clips onto 2-4 implants
  • Fixed Hybrid — Permanently screwed in, only removed by dentist
  • Eliminates adhesive and slipping
  • Preserves jawbone and facial structure
  • Restores 60-90% of natural bite force
comprehensive restoration

full-mouth reconstruction.

Full-mouth reconstruction combines multiple dental procedures to completely rebuild the teeth, bite, and jaw function. It’s designed for patients with extensive damage from decay, trauma, erosion, or long-term neglect — restoring both health and aesthetics in a coordinated treatment plan.

Dr. Skuben and Dr. Agarwal collaborate on complex cases, combining implants, crowns, bridges, orthodontics, and periodontal therapy into a single phased plan. Digital planning ensures every step builds toward the final result.

may include
  • Dental implants (single, multiple, or full-arch)
  • Porcelain crowns, bridges, and veneers
  • Periodontal (gum) treatment
  • Orthodontic alignment
  • Bite reconstruction and TMJ therapy
  • Bone grafting when needed
periodontal care

Perio Protect® — non-surgical gum therapy.

Perio Protect is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared method for treating gum disease. Custom-fitted Perio Trays deliver prescribed medication deep below the gum line where brushing and flossing can’t reach — targeting the bacteria that cause periodontal infection.

Patients wear the trays for just minutes each day at home. The treatment reduces bleeding, inflammation, and pocket depth while freshening breath. It’s especially valuable for implant patients, as healthy gums are critical for long-term implant success.

benefits
  • Non-surgical — no cutting, no stitches
  • At-home treatment — just minutes per day
  • Delivers medication below the gum line
  • Reduces bleeding, inflammation, and pocket depth
  • Freshens breath and whitens teeth as a bonus
aftercare

caring for your implants.

Dental implants require the same care as natural teeth — regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings. With proper hygiene and routine check-ups, your implants can last a lifetime.
daily care
  • Brush twice daily with a soft-bristle toothbrush
  • Floss daily — water flossers work well around implants
  • Avoid chewing ice or very hard objects
  • Visit us every six months for professional cleaning
  • Non-smokers have significantly higher long-term success rates
your implant specialist

a diplomate of the international academy of dental implantology.

Dr. Peter Skuben spent a career in aerospace before turning to dentistry. That engineering mindset — measure twice, plan digitally, execute with precision — defines every implant case he takes on.

I’ve been coming to Newport-Mesa Orthodontics & Family Dentistry for the past few months and I can honestly say it’s the best dental experience I’ve ever had. The entire staff is warm, professional, and incredibly attentive from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave. I had both a deep cleaning and crown work done here, and I was shocked at how comfortable everything was. The dental team (lead by Dr. Skuben) checked in with me constantly, explained each step before they did it, and made sure I never felt any pain or anxiety during the appointments. The front desk team is just as impressive – they’re friendly, organized, and on top of scheduling and insurance, which makes the whole process smooth and stress-free. I really feel like they care about their patients as people, not just appointments on a calendar. If you’re nervous about dental work or have been putting off a deep cleaning or crown because you’re worried about pain, I highly recommend Newport-Mesa Orthodontics & Family Dentistry. They’ve completely changed how I feel about going to the dentist.
Andrew W.
